Cookie Clicker Glossary
Every important term and mechanic in Cookie Clicker, explained. All formulas and values are sourced from the game's source code and the official wiki.
Core
CpS (Cookies per Second)
The primary metric of your cookie empire. It represents how many cookies your buildings generate every second. Most optimization in Cookie Clicker is about maximizing this value through efficient building purchases, upgrades, and multipliers.
Raw CpS
Your base production from buildings before any multipliers are applied. Prestige bonuses, Kitten upgrades, active buffs, and milk are not included. Many game mechanics — especially the Lucky! golden cookie reward — are calculated from Raw CpS rather than your boosted total.
Payback Period (PP)
A formula used to determine how long it takes for a building to pay for itself through the extra cookies it produces. The Cookie Monster formula is: max(cost - bank, 0) / totalCpS + cost / ΔCpS. Lower PP means a better investment. Our analyzer uses this formula for all building recommendations.
Building Milestone
Owning a specific number of a single building type (1, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 600) unlocks an achievement. Each achievement adds 4% milk, which boosts Kitten upgrades. Reaching milestones is one of the most efficient ways to increase your passive CpS.
Prestige
Ascension
The prestige mechanic of Cookie Clicker. You reset your current run to earn Heavenly Chips and Prestige levels, which permanently boost your CpS in all future runs. The prestige formula is: floor((all-time cookies baked / 1 trillion) ^ (1/3)). The recommended target for a first ascension is 365 Heavenly Chips.
Prestige Level
Each prestige level gives a permanent +1% CpS bonus (requires the Legacy heavenly upgrade). At 1,000 prestige levels, that is a 10× multiplier on your entire production. Prestige levels are earned by ascending and are never lost.
Heavenly Chips
The currency of the prestige system. Earned when you ascend, based on your all-time cookies baked. Used to buy permanent upgrades in the Heavenly Upgrade tree. The most important early purchases are Legacy (1 HC), Permanent Upgrade Slot I (100 HC), and How to Bake Your Dragon (9 HC).
Permanent Upgrade Slot
A Heavenly upgrade (Slot I costs 100 HC) that lets you keep one regular upgrade across ascensions. The near-universal recommendation is to put your highest-tier Kitten upgrade in this slot, so it applies from the very first second of your next run. Up to 5 slots can be unlocked.
Multipliers
Milk
A percentage value derived entirely from your achievement count. Every normal achievement adds 4% milk. Milk itself does nothing — it is the input that Kitten upgrades use to calculate their CpS bonus. With 100 achievements, milk is 400%.
Kitten Upgrades
A series of upgrades (Kitten helpers, workers, engineers, overseers, managers, and the heavenly Kitten angels) that multiply your entire CpS based on your current milk percentage. They stack multiplicatively with each other and with all other multipliers, making them the most powerful CpS source in the game.
Synergy Upgrades
Upgrades that provide a bonus based on owning two different building types simultaneously. For example, a synergy between Farms and Temples gives +5% CpS per Temple and +0.1% per Farm. Synergy Vol. I (222,222 HC) and Vol. II (2,222,000 HC) are major prestige milestones that unlock these upgrades.
Golden Cookies
Golden Cookie
A randomly appearing cookie that, when clicked, provides a short-term buff or instant cookies. Clicking 7 golden cookies unlocks Lucky Day (GC appear 2× more often). Clicking 77 unlocks Get Lucky (effects last 2× longer). Stacking golden cookie effects is the most powerful way to progress in the late game.
Frenzy
A golden cookie effect that multiplies your CpS by ×7 for 77 seconds. It is the foundational buff for all combos — most advanced strategies involve waiting for a natural Frenzy before casting Grimoire spells.
Click Frenzy
A golden cookie effect that multiplies your cookies per click by ×777 for 13 seconds. Combined with a Frenzy (×7), the total click multiplier is ×5,439. This is the core of most active combo strategies.
Building Special
A golden cookie effect that multiplies your CpS based on how many of a specific building type you own. The formula is: floor(N/10) + 1, where N is the count of the selected building. With 500 of a building, this is a ×51 CpS multiplier.
Elder Frenzy
A Wrath Cookie effect (only available during the Grandmapocalypse) that multiplies CpS by ×666 for 6 seconds. It is the strongest single CpS multiplier in the game but is very short and only appears as a backfire from Force the Hand of Fate or from Wrath Cookies.
Lucky!
A golden cookie effect that gives you an instant cookie reward. The formula is: min(bank × 0.15 + 13, CpS × 900 + 13). To maximize the payout, you need a bank of at least CpS × 6,000 cookies. During a Frenzy, the effective CpS is ×7, so the bank requirement becomes CpS × 42,000.
Wrath Cookie
A red version of the Golden Cookie that appears during the Grandmapocalypse. It can have negative effects like Clot (halves CpS) or Ruin (loses cookies), but also positive ones like Elder Frenzy (×666 CpS). The probability of Wrath Cookies increases with each stage of the Grandmapocalypse.
Grandmapocalypse
Grandmapocalypse
An endgame event triggered by buying the One Mind research upgrade. It has four stages: Appeased (no wrinklers), Awoken (33% wrath cookies), Displeased (66% wrath cookies), and Angered (100% wrath cookies). Despite looking negative, it is one of the most efficient ways to bake cookies due to Wrinkler income.
Wrinklers
Leech-like creatures that appear during the Grandmapocalypse. Each wrinkler reduces your displayed CpS by 5%, but stores those cookies with a ×1.1 return multiplier. With 10 wrinklers, your total income multiplier is significantly higher than without them. Popping all wrinklers returns everything they stored plus the bonus.
Elder Covenant
An upgrade that stops the Grandmapocalypse at the cost of -5% CpS permanently (until revoked). In almost all scenarios this is not recommended, because the income from Wrinklers far outweighs the 5% cost. It can be revoked with the Revoke Elder Covenant upgrade.
Minigames
Grimoire
A minigame unlocked by leveling Wizard Towers to Lv.1 (costs 1 Sugar Lump). It provides a magic meter and a set of spells. The most important spell is Force the Hand of Fate, which spawns a guaranteed Golden or Wrath Cookie. Spell outcomes are seeded by your game seed and total spells cast, making them predictable.
Force the Hand of Fate (FtHoF)
The most important Grimoire spell. It costs 10 + 60% of your max magic and spawns a guaranteed Golden Cookie (85% chance) or Wrath Cookie (15% backfire). Used to stack a third buff on top of two natural golden cookie effects for maximum combo value.
Pantheon
A minigame unlocked by leveling Temples to Lv.1 (costs 1 Sugar Lump). It has three spirit slots: Diamond (full effect), Ruby (50%), and Jade (25%). Key spirits include Mokalsium (amplifies milk/Kitten bonuses), Godzamok (click bonus when selling buildings during combos), and Vomitrax (faster Wrinkler spawning).
Garden
A minigame unlocked by leveling Farms to Lv.1 (costs 1 Sugar Lump). You grow plants that provide passive bonuses or one-time harvest rewards. Key plants include Bakeberry (harvest during Frenzy for 30 minutes of CpS), Cheapcap (reduces building costs by 0.2% each), and Golden Clover (+3% golden cookie frequency).
Stock Market
A minigame unlocked by leveling Banks to Lv.1 (costs 1 Sugar Lump). You trade 16 goods for profit. Each stock has a resting value of $10 × (index + 1) + Bank Level - 1. Transactions have a 20% overhead cost, reduced to 5% with maximum brokers. Required for the Liquid Assets and Gaseous Assets achievements.
Sugar Lumps
Sugar Lumps
A premium resource that grows over time at roughly one per day. They ripen after 20 hours, mature after 23 hours, and fall automatically at 24 hours. Used to level buildings (unlocking minigames) and for the Sugar Frenzy buff (×3 CpS for 1 hour). With the Sugar Baking heavenly upgrade, each unspent lump gives +1% CpS up to 100 lumps.
Sugar Frenzy
A buff activated by spending 1 Sugar Lump that triples your CpS for 1 hour. Because each lump represents roughly 24 hours of growth, Sugar Frenzy should only be used during your biggest planned combos to maximize the value of the lump spent.
Dragon
Krumblor (Dragon)
A cookie dragon unlocked by the How to Bake Your Dragon heavenly upgrade (9 HC). Fed buildings to level up (max level 25). At higher levels, it can equip two auras simultaneously. Key auras include Radiant Appetite (×2 CpS), Breath of Milk (amplifies milk bonuses), Dragon Harvest (×15 CpS golden cookie effect), and Earth Shatterer (buildings sell for 50% instead of 25%).
Dragon Aura
A passive bonus provided by Krumblor. At level 5, one aura slot is unlocked. At level 25 (max), both slots are available. Radiant Appetite doubles your entire CpS and is the strongest single aura. Breath of Milk amplifies the bonus from milk, stacking with Kitten upgrades.
Deep Dive: Golden Cookie Combos
The meta of modern Cookie Clicker is built around stacking Golden Cookie effects. A Frenzy (×7) combined with a Building Special (e.g., ×51 with 500 buildings) and a Click Frenzy (×777) produces a combined click multiplier of over 277,000× your base cookies per click.
To achieve this, players use the Grimoire minigame (Wizard Towers) to cast Force the Hand of Fate, which spawns a guaranteed Golden Cookie. Using our FtHoF Predictor, you can see what outcomes your next spells will have and plan your combos accordingly.
