Getting started with the garden
The garden unlocks when Farms reach level 1, starting with a small plot that grows as you level Farms further, up to 6×6 tiles. You start with only Baker's Wheat. Every other seed comes from mutations: when two plants grow next to an empty tile, a new plant can sprout there. The planner lets you lay out a plot, see the effects of each plant, and look up exactly which parents each seed needs.
How mutations work
Each garden tick, an empty tile checks its eight neighbors. If the right parents are mature next to it, there is a small chance the new plant appears. For example, two Baker's Wheat next to an empty tile have a chance to grow Thumbcorn, and Baker's Wheat next to Thumbcorn can produce Cronerice. Rare seeds like Golden Clover or Juicy Queenbeet have chances well under 1% per tick, so they need patience and good layouts.
A good layout puts parents in alternating rows with empty tiles between them, so each empty tile touches as many parent pairs as possible. Our mutation guide shows proven layouts.
Choosing a soil
- Dirt: the default. Ticks every 5 minutes.
- Fertilizer: ticks every 3 minutes but weakens plant effects. Best for growing and mutating quickly.
- Clay: ticks every 15 minutes but strengthens effects. Best once your garden is set up for passive bonuses.
- Wood chips: plants spread and mutate more often. The usual choice when hunting rare seeds.
- Pebbles: weak effects, but can automatically collect seeds from plants that die.
Plants worth knowing
Bakeberry and Queenbeet are harvested for a lump of cookies. Juicy Queenbeet gives a sugar lump. Golden Clover and Shimmerlily boost golden cookies, and Whiskerbloom boosts milk. Once you have all 34 seeds, sacrificing the garden gives sugar lumps and the "Seedless to nay" achievement.
Frequently asked questions
How many seeds are there in the garden?
There are 34 seeds. You start with Baker’s Wheat and unlock the rest through mutations.
What soil should I use for mutations?
Wood chips, because plants spread and mutate more often on it. Switch to fertilizer to speed up growth.
